Emberpaw smiled back shyly. ”I’m alright.” He meowed, then, remembering his manners, asked, ”How are you, Pumpkinflower?” Pumpkinflower was a very trustworthy and kind cat, but the presence of a Riverclanner made him feel nervous, and he didn’t sit down either, his instinct telling him to stay on his paws with an ear aimed Cloudfeather’s way. He truly appreciated how Pumpkinflower was so kind to everyone, but he wondered how she could show the same friendly approach with a stranger. He had always envisioned encounters across the borders to be hostile threats, ensuring that none dare try anything suspicious in the other’s eyes. Howlingwind almost flinched at the sudden harshness in Pumpkinflower’s words. Why was she suddenly acting so defensive? He had only been walking with his apprentice, when Pumpkinflower had come up to them and immediately reported to the deputy that she had had a conversation with Cloudfeather about prey, after hunting. He had been relieved to hear that there was no fighting, but with the swing this mood suddenly was taking, he felt like everything he asked would be taken as if he were scolding her, which was farthest from what really was happening. Howlingwind shook his head. ”Ah, no, you’re fine.” He answered to both the questions. The atmosphere was getting awkward. ”I can see that I am not needed here. I’ll leave now. Please excuse us.” Howlingwind politely bowed his head and smiled at Pumpkinflower, and turned to leave, Emberpaw following quickly after, glancing wonderingly over his shoulder at Pumpkinflower. Why had Pumpkinflower suddenly started acting like he was scolding her? Howlingwind knew that as a deputy, he shouldn’t have allowed her to speak to him so rudely, but he had gotten the strong feeling from her that scolding her would certainly cause the tensions to explode. Pumpkinflower was usually a calm, sweet she-cat. What was going on? Deep down, Howlingwind knew exactly why Pumpkinflower was acting so strange: Pumpkinflower was hiding something from him. But on the surface of his feelings, he didn’t want to believe it. He had always trusted the kind, caring she-cat warrior, knowing that she would never hesitate to fight for her clan. He didn’t want to believe that Pumpkinflower could be doing anything wrong. He would have always expected her to have never done anything wrong. But there was only one reason why Pumpkinflower was acting so defensive. There was a secret that she didn’t want him to know. She cared for him deeply, them both really. And she wasn't disloyal for talking to Cloudfeather. The tortoiseshell she-cat looked over at Cloudfeather. She hoped he wasn't offended at the commotion. "Don" mind, Howlingwind. His meow is worse than his bite. He's really a great guy...He was my mentor and I know he wouldn't have said anything if he didn't care." She lowered her blue gaze. "What can I say, I love him. He's one of my best friends."
