Nightfeather walked away from the other cats, ready to start hunting on her and Rockettail's hunting patrol. Since new-leaf had arrived, the prey were beginning to become really plentiful. The black she-cat had always been really good at hunting, and was glad to see prey fill the territory once again. Her hunting partner, Rockettail, had been in a really good mood, as he usually was, and she was glad to be hunting with someone who she got along with really well. She usually got stuck hunting with some cat who would never talk to her the whole time, and this always made her feel even worse than she normally felt. Being with Rockettail always lifted her spirits, and boosted her self-esteem. Coming out of her thoughts after what seemed like forever, Nightfeather looked behind her to make sure that the grey tom was still behind her and hadn't wandered off.

Rockettail trotted quickly, running to keep up with Nightfeather. "I'm coming! Wait for me, Nightfeather!" he meowed. With new-leaf in full, he expected that they would see more prey out, and with him and Nightfeather working together, he expected their hunt to be very successful. It always seemed like the other clan members were always so negative when he was around. But Nightfeather always treated him kindly, and so the optimistic two seemed to always get a long well. Rockettail trotted up to Nightfeather's side and let out a sigh of contentment. "The weather's like, perfect!" He meowed, grinning at Nightfeather, his bright blue eyes shining in the light of the sun. "So, where do ya wanna start?"
Nightfeather laughed a little as she saw that Rockettail had to run to keep up with her, and slowed her pace to match his. "Sorry for leaving you behind! I guess I had my head in the clouds." She laughed, a smile spreading across her maw. The black she-cat nodded happily when Rockettail mentioned the wonderful weather. "I completely agree! A perfect day for hunting!" She purred, her eyes glowing happily. She looked up into some of the trees that randomly spotted the territory and saw birds fluttering around in the trees, and saw squirrels chattering on the ground. Nightfeather frowned a little when Rockettail asked her where they wanted to start hunting. "I'm not sure." She admitted, then spotted a squirrel digging around a tree not too far from them, completely focused on it's task and not noticing them. "But right here is as good as anywhere!" She whispered, and crouched down to stalk towards the squirrel. When she was only about a tail-length from it, she wiggled her haunches and pounced just as the prey noticed her and took off. She ran after the squirrel and chased it around the tree a couple of times before it decided to try and run up the tree. When it was about half way up the tree she jumped at it, catching it by the tail with her claws and yanking it onto the ground. The black she-cat jumped onto it as soon as it hit the ground and snapped it's neck, feeling the body go limp in her jaws. She turned around to Rockettail with her catch, her eyes glowing. Setting it down, she smiled happily. "I think that was a pretty good catch!" Nightfeather meowed happily, picking the bushy fur of the squirrel out of her claws.

Rockettail grinned and replied. "Aww, don't sweat it! I don't mind at all!" He purred as his bright blue eyes shone, and followed Nightfeather's gaze up into a few of the trees, seeing a few birds fluttering around, and squirrels chattering on the ground. Rockettail reached forward and stretched his shoulders and legs, as if he were getting ready for some sort of vigorous exercise. "Hehehe~! Those squirrels are just like, pleading for us to go and catch them!" He waited and watched as Nightfeather crouched down to stalk towards the squirrel. Like a professional, Nightfeather stalked through the shadows of the forest as silent as nothing, and the squirrel didn't notice its doomed fate until the black predator was upon it. A short chase ensued, and Rockettail wondered for a moment if his tree climbing skills would be needed, in case the squirrel decided to escape up a tree. But before it could climb to safety, Nightfeather was faster, and brought it to the ground. The fight was over in less than an instant.
Rockettail trotted happily over to Nightfeather, a loud purr rumbling in his chest. "Dude, that was like, totally awesome!! That squirrel never had a chance, even if it did! You're awesome, Nightfeather!" He congratulated her with a big wide smile.
Giggling, he turned and gazed around to check for any prey that hadn't been scared off by the hunt, and saw a squirrel clinging to a smaller tree, thinking that it should have chosen one of the taller ones. "Now watch this!" He giggled gleefully, then ran over to the tree, and began climbing up its side, almost as easily as the squirrels did it themselves! His huge curved claws dug into the bark as he climbed, while his hind legs kicked out, pushing himself higher and higher. The squirrel started screeching, trying everything it could to scare away its predator, but Rockettail was too focused on the excitement of the hunt to back down. In a final dash, Rockettail leaped up the remainder of the trunk and snatched the bewildered squirrel from the branch, and landed with the limp body in his mouth. Puffing out his chest and holding his head and tail up high, he proudly pranced over to Nightfeather, the squirrel dangling from his jaws.

Nightfeather felt her fur flash hot in embarrassment when Rockettail congratulated her on her catch. "Thank you, Rockettail!" She meowed happily, her eyes shining bright. She wasn't very used to being praised, and when she did get praised it felt nice. To her, it brought along a sense of belonging. She watched as her companion turned around, his eyes focused on a squirrel that was in the branches of a smallish sapling. She flicked her tail quietly, nodding in his direction. This was sure to be interesting. She watched in amazement, her mouth open in a silent gasp, as Rockettail went after the squirrel, climbing the tree with ease. The prey tried to put up a fight, screeching at the tom as if saying to back off, but the grey tom wasn't going to have it. He launched himself up the rest of the trunk, landing back on the ground with the squirrel already hanging limply in his jaws. Nightfeather jumped up to run to him, her amber eyes glowing with excitement. "That was amazing, Rockettail!" She cheered, practically jumping up and down. "You're an amazing hunter! And what a nice catch!" She congratulated, her tail waving happily.

Rockettail's smile was unrestrained as he accepted Nightfeather's cheers. "Hehehe~ It was nothing! Nothing at all! 'Twas just a little bit of effort on my part! Hahahaha~!" He boasted, his nose in the air and his chest sticking out proudly as he laughed, flicking his tail arrogantly. "That Ravenclaw don't know what she's talkin' about! Hahahaha! See, I knew we'd make a great team!" Rockettail trotted over to a bush and buried his catch under some bramble, then stood back to let Nightfeather bury hers. Reaching his front arms up in the air, he grasped a tree's trunk and stretched his shoulders while sharpening his over-sized claws. "Ahh that feel's good." He sighed, stretching his shoulders and then jumping back down on the ground. He smiled at Nightfeather and meowed. "Okay! Let's go hunt some more!"

Nightfeather laughed lightheartedly at Rockettail's comment about Ravenclaw. "I agree! She must be jealous of our amazing hunting skills." She joked, her white-tipped tail waving through the air. Following her companion's lead, the black she-cat buried her squirrel under the brambles as well, stomping the ground flat with her paws. She wasn't going to let some other predator take her catch. Turning back around, Nightfeather smiled at the tom, and looked overhead as a group of birds flew through the high branches. "Those birds are just begging to be fresh-kill. They're lucky us cats can't fly!" She laughed, a large smile spreading across her face. "I'm no good at catching birds anyways." She meowed, starting to walk again as a warm breeze blew through her fur. "I wonder what it would be like to fly. Do you suppose Starclan can fly?" She meowed thoughtfully, her amber eyes sparkling, and then looked back at Rockettail and laughed in embarrassment. She quickly gave her paw an embarrassed lick and smiled sheepishly. "There I go again, rambling nonsense. I probably sound like a mouse-brain right now." Nightfeather meowed quietly, a small smile still on her face.

Rockettail snickered at Nightfeather's comment about Ravenclaw. "I bet you she couldn't climb trees to catch a squirrel! She's too fluffy! The squirrel'd see a big fluffy black cat coming a mile away!" Nightfeather was, he realized at this pleasant moment, probably the only friend he had that would ever hang out with him, talk to him, and laugh with him. Then again, when he really did think about it, Nightfeather was probably his only friend.
Looking up at the flock of birds, he snickered again. "Who needs to fly to catch birds? Not when I can do this!" Again, the show off was at it again, sprinting effortlessly up the tree and leaping through the branches just as the birds within realized that the branches weren't a safe place to land, and they would have to find another place to land. He leaped up off a higher branch, then long curved claws lashed out, snagging one of the retreating birds, which he promptly put down with his fangs. Then the ninja like tom jumped down, branch by branch, and finally the rest of the five foot drop to the soft marshy ground below. Dropping his catch, he meowed. "See, I don't need to fly! I can climb trees! Hehe~!" He smiled proudly.
But he hadn't forgotten Nightfeather's question before he had taken off. With a sheepish grin, he shrugged. "I always thought they could, like, float, or something. Like, when they come down here to, ya know, do their thing, like with the medicine cats and the Moonstone and all that stuff, they sorta like, float down from the stars!" He ducked his head a little, feeling a tad bit embarrassed at his imaginative thoughts, but then, meeting Nightfeather's amber gaze with his blue eyes, he wondered if she would understand. If anyone did, it would be Nightfeather. He laughed nervously, then continued. "It's just that sometimes I do wonder, ya know?"
"I think the squirrels would probably think she was one of them! That would certainly be fun to watch." The black she-cat purred. The sun suddenly came out from behind a cloud, and Nightfeather squinted her amber eyes as the sun shined in her face. She heard Rockettail meow about not having to fly, and heard him take off through the grass. When the sun wasn't blinding her anymore, the she-cat smiled wide as she watched her grey companion launch himself up through a tree towards the birds she saw. Rockettail effortlessly threw himself through the branches, and Nightfeather watched in amazement, her eyes wide in excitement, as he snagged one of the birds by the wing and caught it. Like a bird himself, Rockettail jumped down from the tree, the bird hanging limp in his mouth. "Whoa! Nice catch!" Nightfeather congratulated as she trotted up to her companion, a large smile on her face. "You jumped through the trees like a squirrel! If I tried to do that I would probably fall on my face." She laughed, and stayed quiet as Rockettail explained what he thought about her idea of Starclan flying. "Yeah, I guess you're right. Floating probably sounds more believable." She meowed, her voice thoughtful. It was sort of weird to think about that kind of stuff. Nonetheless, Nightfeather smiled warmly at Rockettail, her eyes glowing. "I know how you feel. I think about stuff like that all the time. Like, why do we live on the ground instead of the trees? It just sort of makes you think for a while." She said, then laughed. It wasn't very often that she would talk about this sort of thing with anyone else. Another cat in her clan probably would've called her mouse-brained for thinking such a thing, but she normally didn't care.

Rockettail's purr chortled as he chuckled and purred at the same time. "She's definitely got the bushy tail!" He meowed in agreement. Grinning appreciatively at Nightfeather's praise, he patted her on the shoulder with his tail. "Awh it's not all that great!" He giggled humbly, even though his nose was high in the air with pride. "I bet someone like you could easily do that 'cause you're so graceful!" He meowed, although he smiled nervously, realizing that he had said something that could be taken in a certain way. Well, he wasn't that nervous, but he might have just given away something of what he thought of her...
Rockettail just grinned proudly as he answered; having a conversation like this was just as natural to him as any other conversation, and he saw nothing extraordinary about topics like this. "Well, ya know, there was Skyclan, who were known for jumping around in trees. They say that a few cats of Skyclan ended up joining the remaining four clans, so maybe I've got some Skyclan blood in me too!" He meowed, pointing to his chest.
