Emberpaw rose early that morning, stretching his limbs before heading out from the apprentice's den to get a snack. Lately, it seemed that the apprentice's den was filling up. But he knew that it was coming to be time for him to get ready for his first assessment to become a warrior. For some reason or another, Echofire, his mentor, wasn't around these days. Was Echofire not feeling well? He didn't know, but he wondered if his mentor had a hard Leaf-Bare.
Emberpaw took a squirrel from the fresh kill pile. For one thing, he was already taller than his mentor, and every day, growing to be more and more like his father, Howlingwind, in size, strength, and physicality. Gnawing on the squirrel's bones, his thoughts drifted to his mother, Whitesplash, who hadn't come from the warriorr's den very often. Was she feeling ill too? Emberpaw sighed sadly. He didn't understand what was happening to his family members. Mousekit had died while they were still kits, and had not even become apprentices yet. And now his mother and mentor were leaving him. What was he supposed to do? He often caught Howlingwind gazing sadly at the warrior's den. It must be hard for Father to handle it too... He thought.
After finishing his meal, Emberpaw left the camp and walked to the Sandy Hollow. Lately his only solution for escaping his stress and worry was to get stronger. It was the only option he could think of. Even if no matter how hard he trained by himself, he would never be strong enough to fight off Whitesplash and Echofire's sicknesses. Only a medicine cat has the power to do that.
